Random train of thought…

Pre dinner Helena is reading a book with altered silly fairy stories. During dinner everything is about “poo” Then she decided she wanted to write and write and write… !!!!! A total jump in subject. She was pretty pretty excited to work out putting an e on the end of wipe. Then that wipe, life…

Not even pretending I understand…

This is a several day activity. I can’t remember why the duplo even came out, but after the rush, when she was alone and the building slowed down and became more deliberate… … Helena made sets, recently renamed as duplo sticks or wands. She was so excited to show me how they were the perfect…

$2.99 beads

Children have creativity in spades. When I was pestered to purchase a tower of plastic containers with beads all I saw were a few necklaces. On the way home Helena talked about necklaces while making music with them. So far the beads have had to have buddies, are babies, have a slide, a stage and…

This weeks little bits of random…

Why does she have to do this at night… (well apart from her mother and grandmothers being night owls) “I  JUST want to see if different countries have different weights of coins”. Or this one… Possibly she’s just delaying bed time by wanting to learn to tell the time- worried I’m sending her to bed…

Home baking

Or is it kitchen chemistry? I did baking at school as a teacher – it’s a common learning tool, process cooking is the lingo at playcentre. Pre event: Such a big event has to be planned for… so a week in advance this list was written. I’m not allowed to take a photo of the filled in sheet until after. I’m looking forward to the sipriss (even predictive text knew that was surprises). Next she had to enlist others as she…

Helena led trips..

When Helena chooses a trip they tend to be revisiting something she liked before. Helena use to love Capital E which is mainly for preschoolers so runs more or less school hours. I think it is occasionally a bit twee. This time we had to go in a weekend… So there were even more than…

yet more Science…

“Explain to me what you are doing?” “Well I am balancing like that, goodness that’s not right I had it like that before, then the little side only the ball (golf ball in a baby sock) falls which means the balls much heavier than the other thing (wooden cotton reel) and then it falls down…

To sport or not to sport?

The Steiner schools think sport is for exercise, health, agilty and enjoyment and competitiveness isn’t encouraged except against one’s self. Montessori schools de-emphasise competitiveness and encourage cooperation. Why? There is a certain pleasure in having rules as defined by someone else governing your game, an abdication of responsibility and it’s easy. For me this pleasure…

More “set ups”

This time with rose petals collected from the ground yesterday. They were intended for some kind of fairy bed… But lots of dudes got rather lovely beds, all tucked up. “Mum wouldn’t you like a bed like that, that smelt like that”
