Everyone is homeschooling

Except they aren’t… There is quite a difference to visiting a place than there is living in a place. Same with homeschooling. I think there are people who are enjoying, even relishing visiting homeschooling, hopefully all those people we did playcentre with are revisiting the joy of child led play, and are people with energy…

2019 the report

School is over for the year… Here is Helena 3 months later reading her report… being reflective.

a little reflection..

I think it is important to reflect. It’s an important part of learning, all that metacognition, even perhaps where most of the learning occurs. I am also open with Helena about what the government requires of me/us to let her be homeschooled, ie…as often as and and as good as what she’d get at school….

How is she reading?

I read this Article which pulls apart  how teachers teach learning to read.  This is not just relevant to America, it even mentions Marie Clay who was an important part of what we learnt at teachers college – the horrible running records. I was taught to teach the “three cueing” method. When I was a nanny in…

A day in the life

This is what Helena did today while I spent the whole day cleaning the pantry – we have moths and I was worried we had cockroaches but it turns out they just visit the plastics cupboard on occasion. 9am – She’s just got up, is in pjs and she’s microwaving a marshmallow which was in…

the term 4 horrors…

Each new year seems to start with promise, it’s summer and the world is one’s oyster so you think up glorious plans that this year you will achieve. Term one has a cover page perhaps with a list of formidable goals that one cheerfully thinks are so totally do able in that excitable new years…

Report writing

It’s the end of the year….. Me “so Helena what have you learned this year?” Helena “nothing” “Oh”… so I go find evidence, our journal, our folder, things she’s written and she (with the odd prod) comes up with: Writing ★ I’ve learnt some words off by heart ★ I am thinking about blends ★…

play, real life or just work?

Aren’t they all the same? Context: Last week she was waiting for a friend to arrive, due at 2pm and it’s 9am… long time right. She’s at a loss so I chuck “busy work” at her, in this case a maths book with questions and pictures that she can write in. We sit at the…

a normal day (20.09.18)

Some context: I leave Helena to do what she will with her day. I am attempting to see what she will independently do. I don’t tell her this but after a while every time the alarm goes she says “ask me what I’m doing mummy”… I want to know how long she sustains a period…

writing week (27-31.08.18) with no slapping

For some reason this week Helena did some writing… was she not worried about details, that first time perfection? She did have something to say, and has rather enjoyed the re-reading and likes reading it to me. It says – “I thought this in the night and thought Mum would like it so I waited…
