stuff I don’t get..

This is Helena following one of her passions -Nursery rhymes! I don’t get it. Why couldn’t she choose song lyrics? Or poetry…. or like a friend learn the entirety of Spike Milligan reading Bad Jelly the Witch by listening to it on a kids radio show- seriously impressive. This nursery rhyme passion has been going…

Lockdown again

but yet scarily like our every day life.. There are the weird nature related tasks – making wands with flowers from the garden… The slightly less weird but unpredictable – this time mating snails… The eating in odd locations… Followed by some schoolish activities, not assigned by me but some of those activity styley maths…

We’re back in homeschool land…

Back to catered meetings…. Back with new ideas… Helena has come up a new scheme using points, she does stuff – especially “school work” like stuff and gets points that add up to “goals” where we do stuff together or I support her to do stuff with her friends. I have said it’s your scheme…

Feeling powerful

I absolutely love my job. Every school holidays I work for a friend. My friend is the best boss I’ve ever had which of course makes things easier, she insures that not only is the actual job fun but that I also feel agency, that I am free to make many of the day to…

Kids talking

There is a thing teachers do at schools where you monitor kids talking to see whether it is on task chatter, usually it isn’t, because it is so good when the kids are talking about the task as it adds to their understanding. On task talk is the holy grail of education. Today’s task as…

Writing

I read a little friend’s school report and there was one sentence that struck a chord with me which approximately goes “… is not keen on writing in a teacher directed task.” The keen part is not a direct quote as I’m sure the word was more teachery. I thought both ‘why would he?’ and…

War

At the holiday programme the kids like to play war “lots of war… raaaaa”  and we let them. It looks like chaos, lots of kids running around with long bamboo sticks and a few with bows and arrows all pointed at people with the accompanying loud roars. Hardly anyone gets hurt, and none badly. We…

What we did today

Helena has this idea for a book she wants to write where the facing pages will be black with white writing and white with black writing. One side is reality and the other is life inside the mind – probably because she is always away with the fairies. This is my version. The stuff in…

Pulling apart

Helena has decided pulling things apart is fun. We had a free view box that no longer works. It’s hard to teach kids about Electronics when this is what they look like. I remember making a radio that I had to solder but there weren’t that many pieces and it wasn’t a difficult map but…

Synchronicity

Helena brought this with some of her birthday money. It was something that she’d wanted for ages… A lockable journal… the lockable part was the important part it’s glitteryness just a bonus. I actually remember really wanting and having something like this. It was like reliving a part of myself, though I had no secrets….
