too cute

This afternoon the lovely children spent ages doing a word hunt for me… there was a map so they could tick them off as I found them…. I got a prize- home made lemonade. Now they have delivered a cup of lemonade to the neighbor, their lemon, and saved one for Helena’s friend’s mum.

leaving her to it

Recently I have been leaving Helena to her own devices, more than usual, as I am painting the house (she has been offered $ to help) and working on the sleep out (I thought she would be interested but no..). I am modeling er something I hope. Helena has found her own project and it…

stuff I don’t get..

This is Helena following one of her passions -Nursery rhymes! I don’t get it. Why couldn’t she choose song lyrics? Or poetry…. or like a friend learn the entirety of Spike Milligan reading Bad Jelly the Witch by listening to it on a kids radio show- seriously impressive. This nursery rhyme passion has been going…

Lockdown again

but yet scarily like our every day life.. There are the weird nature related tasks – making wands with flowers from the garden… The slightly less weird but unpredictable – this time mating snails… The eating in odd locations… Followed by some schoolish activities, not assigned by me but some of those activity styley maths…

Introverts inc

I thanked Helena’s teacher for making her school experience positive, as judged by Helena wanting to go when she was sick and me not having to drag her in. I also said something to Helena’s teacher about how school can be hard for introverts to which she replied that this was just due to “some…

Even when it’s wet.

The kids need to be outside even when it’s wet, they complain but once they are out there there are less arguments, less getting hurt. It’s not just the two restless animals I look after on a Tuesday, who mostly sort themselves out by just going out, it’s everyone. I really notice this at the…

Weather studies and joy…

It rained so we visited our local bridge over a stream to see the flooding. It was a river. Our garage flooded. Then it rained on the day I have two kids who together turn into a noisy monster that needs to move it’s body in an expansive way and when I say rained I…

Learning experiences

We were once again headed off into the back of beyond to be hut wardens. No cell phone reception and not much to ‘do’ as everything has to be carried in on your back.. a place to just be. The biggest hurdle is the first days walking. On the map and the signs it says…

A wee slice of life

9am- kids are on the couch looking for poo in a see if you can find book… Helena isn’t dressed. 9:15- Helena is now dressed and breakfasted and they are both putting their shoes on to go up to the dairy for 50c mixtures. Oh the motivation. 9:30- kids are back and have bowls and…

Down the lake

We are “down the lake” as people in Nelson seem to say… possibly only people with a connection to THE lake, as in Lake Rotoiti and St Arnaud. It’s an alpine village, in that it is at a higher altitude and there are mountains all around and that it how it styles itself. There are…
